Firefighters walk 50 miles in gear to support 8-year-old boy battling cancer, raise awareness

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A recently retired fire captain walked more than 50 miles to support a fellow firefighter and his son who is battling stage four cancer.

WGHP reports Captain Tim Gibbs and several other firefighters dressed in full gear, and made the journey from Fire Station No. 7 in Greensboro to Duke Medical Center in Durham.

That's where 8-year-old Morgan Nolen is undergoing stem cell treatment.

Gibbs' goal was to get to the hospital in four days.

"Oh it's worth it. This little boy is fighting cancer every day, so we are going to suck it up for a few," he said. "We are just going to keep praying and believing that God's going to do a miracle in his life."

Gibbs hoped the walk would raise awareness for a fundraiser happening next month.
