SEATTLE -- Contract talks between the state's largest teachers union and the school district have stalled over pay, student testing, and the length of the school day.
Seattle teachers have a long list of grievances, but the biggest sticking point, of course, is pay.
Here’s the situation with teacher pay in Seattle:
- Starting Salary: $44,372
- Top Salary: $86,435
- Average Salary: $65,000
- Household Median: $70,000
Though Seattle teachers are among the best paid educators in the state, they also teach in one of the most expensive regions, and they argue their salaries have just not kept up. In fact, they aren’t paid as much as Everett teachers, whose starting pay is $2,500 a year more.
Here’s what teachers are pushing for:
- Union demand: 18% (over 3 years)
- District offer: 8.2% (over 3 years)
- State pay increase (already approved): 4.8% (over 2 years)
If no deal is reached in the next few days, school won’t start as planned next Wednesday.
