Don't forget! Wear a yellow shirt Wednesday, show support for wildland firefighters

TACOMA -- Officials are encouraging everyone to wear a yellow shirt on Wednesday, September 2nd to show support for our wildland firefighters.

The Pierce County Department of Emergency Management first posted the idea last week:

"Show your support for the thousands of wildland firefighters responding to record-breaking fires in eastern Washington and along the West Coast by wearing a yellow shirt on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Wildland firefighter uniforms are typically yellow shirts and green pants. Join Pierce County Department of Emergency Management for “Yellow Shirt Day” to thank those that are putting their lives on the line to help others during this fire season."

2015 has seen some of the most devastating fire seasons in Washington state history.

The Okanogan Complex of wildfires was the largest in state history until more than half was split off by fire managers into a separately managed blaze. It's already cost $13.7 million to fight, and 1,244 firefighters remain on the lines.

Several thousand people gathered Sunday to honor three U.S. Forest Service firefighters killed battling the wildfires in north-central Washington.

Three other firefighters suffered minor injuries, and a fourth is recovering at a Seattle hospital after being badly burned.
