Mariners Iwakuma pitches 5th no-hitter in team history

SEATTLE -- Mariners starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma, 34, pitched the fifth no-hitter in team history Wednesday afternoon, and the fourth by a single pitcher.

Iwakuma walked three and struck out seven in a 3-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles at Safeco Field.

This is the first Mariners no-hitter since August 15, 2012, when Felix Hernandez pitched a perfect game. Hernandez' perfect game was the last no-hitter in the American League before Iwakuma's.

Iwakuma is the second Japanese-born pitcher to throw a no-hitter in the MLB, after Hideo Nomo.

Iwakuma joins Hernandez, Randy Johnson and Chris Bosio as the only Mariners pitchers to throw a complete game no-hitter. In 2012, six Mariners pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter.

Following the game, Iwakuma thanked the fans.

"I felt the fans a lot," Iwakuma said through his interrupter. "Without them I couldn't do this."
