20-year-old woman gets more than 3 years for shaking baby

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — A Lacey woman has been sentenced to three years and five months in prison in connection to head injuries that sent her baby to the hospital.

The Olympian reports that 20-year-old Leneisha Nicholas was sentenced Monday in Thurston County Superior Court. She had pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree assault of a child/domestic violence.

Prosecutors say Nicholas was arrested in September 2014 after taking her 10-month-old child to the emergency room with new and old skull fractures. She later confessed to police that she shook the child until his eyes rolled back in his head and he began having a seizure.

The boy survived his injuries and will have his feeding tube removed this week.

Defense attorney Zachary Wagnild said Nicholas was diagnosed with severe postpartum depression.
