Crews search for missing man in Puget Sound near Gig Harbor

GIG HARBOR - Rescue crews are searching Puget Sound for a missing man who fell into the water near the Tacoma Narrows bridge early Friday morning.

The man, in his 20s, was walking along a hillside with another man when they both lost their balance and fell down a hill around 3 a.m., Gig Harbor Fire Chief Eric Waters said.

One man made it to shore near Narrows Park and knocked on someone's door to report what had happened, Waters said.

The man told officials that the other man was missing and rescue crews responded. Crews from Gig Harbor Fire, West Pierce Fire and Rescue, Tacoma Fire and the US Coast Guard are involved in the search.

The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter from Port Angeles. West Pierce FD sent their fire boat "Endeavor" and Tacoma FD sent their boat "Destiny."

Waters told Q13FOX that the search area extends from the Tacoma Narrows bridge to Point Fosdick, in Puget Sound.

Earlier, crews reported that the missing individuals were actually young boys swimming in the water. This was incorrect, crews said.
