Man detained after suspicious letters sent to 24 sheriff's offices in Oregon

PORTLAND -- A man in the Eugene, Ore., area has been detained in connection with  suspicious letters, some containing an unknown substance, that were sent to 24 county sheriff's offices, KPTV in Portland reported Tuesday.

The FBI and Oregon State Police launched a statewide investigation Monday after multiple sheriff's offices received the letters.

The Association of Oregon Counties reported that 24 of Oregon's 36 counties received a suspicious envelope. "AOC is deeply concerned that someone would target Oregon county sheriffs with this kind of a threat," the association said.

Oregon State Police reported Tuesday that a man had been detained for questioning in this case. His name was not immediately released, as he had not yet been arrested.

However, an OSP spokesman told KPTV that detectives believe he is behind the letters and charges are pending. There was no word on what those charges may be or what the motive was in this case.

Police said they do not believe there is any remaining threat.

The FBI reported that field testing by hazardous materials crews showed no toxic substance on any letter or in any envelope.
