Commuter train hits, kills pedestrian in Seattle

SEATTLE (AP) — A BNSF Railway spokesman says a northbound commuter train has struck and killed a female pedestrian in the north Seattle area.

Spokesman Gus Melonas said the BNSF crew operating the Sound Transit train saw the pedestrian on the edge of the railroad ties shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Crew members sounded the horn and applied the emergency brake but were unable to stop in time.

The train was headed from Seattle to Everett, Washington, on a rail line that runs along the shore of Puget Sound. It was traveling about 45 mph.

Train traffic in the area has been temporarily halted while the crash is investigated.

Melonas says this is the 13th fatality this year on BNSF rail tracks in Washington state.
