TUKWILA, Wash. -- A brush fire quickly spread from a hillside to the deck of a Tukwila apartment building Saturday night.
Fire crews were called to the 1500-block of MacAdam Road S. just after 9 p.m. on reports of a small brush fire.
Within minutes of the first 911 calls, flames quickly gained ground, and some shot more than 30 feet into the air, Tukwila Fire Department said.
Several crews worked to contain flames to the hillside, but the fire pushed toward an apartment building at the top of the hill.
Fire investigators say a second story balcony caught fire and one apartment was damaged due to the excessive heat.
20 people were evacuated from the scene, but 16 were allowed to return the same night. No injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but firefighters have “good evidence that fireworks were possibly involved,” Tukwila Fire Department said.
Despite cooler temperatures over the weekend, first responders stressed that the region still has extreme fire conditions, and they continue to discourage the use of fireworks.
