VIDEO: Fire erupts at Civic Stadium, forces evacuations in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A fire official in Eugene, Oregon, says a spectacular fire has destroyed the city's historic Civic Stadium and prompted the temporary evacuation of a nearby two-block area.

Eugene-Springfield Fire Chief Randy Groves said the stadium's dry, seasoned lumber caused the fire to spread quickly Monday evening. He said the cause is under investigation.

Groves says no one was hurt.

Police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said Monday evening that police are urging people within a two-block radius to evacuate.

The Register-Guard reportedthe fire was declared under control just after 7 p.m.

Police spokesman John Hankemeier said firefighters called to the stadium at about 5:30 p.m. Monday found flames shooting twice the height of the structure. Nearly 40 emergency workers responded.

The fire chief later said the stadium was a total loss.

Smoke from the fire was visible throughout the Willamette Valley city.

The Eugene Emeralds played at Civic Stadium for 41 years before moving to the University of Oregon's PK Park in 2010, according to KPTV.
