Man trying to swim across Chelan River dies, sheriff says

WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — The Chelan County sheriff in central Washington says the body of a 27-year-old man who got into trouble while trying to swim the Chelan River has been recovered.

Sheriff Brian Burnett said the body was recovered Wednesday. The man's name was not immediately released pending notification of relatives.

Burnett says dispatchers got a report late Tuesday night of a person yelling for help in the river. Deputies learned that two men had been trying to swim across the river. One began struggling and yelling for help when he was about halfway across. He turned around and tried to swim back but did not reach the shore.

A late night search land and water search failed to find him. His body was found Wednesday in about 25 feet of water.
