OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Washington State Ferries officials are recommending a 2.5 percent fare increase for vehicles and a 1 percent fare increase for passengers in a continued effort to fully fund and employ the system.

The Kitsap Sun reports that the proposed fare increases were presented to the Transportation Commission in Spokane Tuesday.

The Legislature calculated a 2.5 percent across-the-board increase Oct. 1 and another a year later would generate $357 million in fares it needs for the 2015-17 transportation budget. A lower passenger rate hike will not fund the program. But the ferries system proposed to make up the difference with the second fare increase May 1 instead of Oct. 1.

Public meetings will be held on the proposal in July. It would become official at a public hearing Aug. 4.

I took the Kingston/Edmonds ferry the other day. It cost $15.30 seems to me a high price to pay for a 20 minute ride. The Ferry system is poorly run with an overhead that could be easily reduced and passed on to the consumer. But then again it is just another bloated poorly run State system.

I don’t have a problem with making the people who use the ferry system paying to use it the same way I don’t mind paying to use the state park system (my self included). I can tell you all the only major problem with the ferry system in one word (so let the name calling start now) “unions”.

And this is what you get from a state government run entity. Tolls on the Tacoma bridge have gone up how many times? 5? 6? I know the state auditor investigated the ferry system and determined they didn’t know what was coming in or going out with their funding so how do they know they need more? It’s just ridiculous.

what is absurd is the Eastern Washington Republicans with their free ferry and no tolls, blocking funding for our toll bridges and toll ferries.
