Traffic to get rough during U.S. Open this week

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. -- The town of University Place will double in population during the U.S. Open and organizers say streets will grow congested during the weeklong event.

Vic Wilson has a front row seat to the biggest show in the Pacific Northwest as car after car use his quiet neighborhood street in front of his house.

"People thinking they can drive down to the course but they can’t. They don’t know where I’m going" when driving home, Wilson said.

Organizers say a lot more traffic is expected in the coming days as the tournament gets under way. Spectators need to park at the designated lots at Fort Steilacoom Park and the Puyallup Fairgrounds. Then they can take a 30-minute shuttle to the event.

Gary Cooper, University Place public works director, said, "If you don’t go to the advised parking lot, then that’s when you start having backup problems -- and you go down and you can’t find someplace to park."
