SEATTLE (AP) — A federal monitor who is overseeing Seattle's police reforms says it's time for all the city's officers to be using body cameras.

The Seattle Times reports ( ) that the monitor, Merrick Bobb, calls the cameras a key tool for accountability and transparency and says the time to use them is now.

The monitor's strong support for body cameras is contained in a 47-page report made public Monday. It's the fifth semiannual report since the city entered into a 2012 consent decree with the U.S. Justice Department to curtail excessive force and biased policing.

Bobb's recommendation comes as the police department confirms that it plans to shift from a small pilot program involving body cameras to department-wide use of the cameras by about 640 patrol officers.

He says studies show body cameras substantially reduce use of force and citizen complaints.

The report also praises the department's efforts to comply with the consent decree. He commended Police Chief Kathleen O'Toole and her newly formed command staff.

best statement yet, let’s see if Mayor Mccheese will lead by example and have his every working moments captured on camera.

    • Brad

You beat me to it. I was coming here to say the exact same thing. Ed Murray and that Chief should have to wear one too.

      • "peety"

when was the last time a Mayor was accused of excessive force and racism? I’m pretty sure everywhere the Mayor goes, there are cameras and plenty of witnesses.

        • tootietuttle

when was the last time ALL police were accused of excessive force and racism? A select few officers who have been judged unfit from the thousands who do their job well. What’s next with you liberals, should we make teachers wear body cams so they don’t have inappropriate relations with students? Should we make county and state workers wear body cams so they don’t fall asleep on the job??

          • Aaron Lynch

We charge teachers criminally if they fail to report POSSIBLE child abuse, so why in the hell don’t we hold police to the same standard? The **ONLY** reason cameras are necessary is the blue wall, and… there is ZERO opposition to them except coming from the police/Police union. Which would be the very same police union that had 100+ members oppose federal standards forced on them because of brutality. You must really live in a bubble to say “they are all good’ when this particular department has massive, long standing and systemic problems with racism and brutality.

If your assertion were true, all these cops up on charges would have been turned in and arrested by their fellow officers rather than aided and abetted.

  • The World is Ending

For some people body cameras won’t make any difference, because if the police use Any force at all they will say it is exsesive. The police could go to arrest someone and even if the guy shoots at them or attacks them with any other weapon some people believe the most they should do is say “would you please give up and pretty pleas come with us to jail?” And if the guy don’t give up and keeps up his violent activity then the police should just say “we understand that you don’t want to go to jail and going to jail would make you Feel bad so we will go away now. Are you one of the people who don’t want to hurt the poor innocent criminals feelings “Peety”?

        • tootietuttle

criminals like Michael Brown aren’t good for anyone either. If that is your argument, we should all be wearting body cams. Mayor Mccheese is as big a hypocrite as all liberals. Do as I say, not as I do.

    • Aaron Lynch

It’s true that ‘some people’ scream butality for little no reason. Which is exactly why cops should be pro body camera, because they protect ‘good cops’ in those incidents very effectively.

There is one reason and one reason only police oppose cameras, because they **KNOW** that many of their standard operating procedures and training is flat out illegal and they fear the public will “misunderstand’ their ‘need’ to bully.
