Suspect in deadly SUV crash bails out of jail; family of one of the teen victims talks of their loss

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The man accused of being the driver whose SUV plowed into high school students in Ferndale, killing two and injuring two others, bailed out of jail Friday.

William Klein, 34, of Bellingham, is accused of two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault in the crash Wednesday. His SUV jumped the curb and plowed into a group of students walking on the sidewalk as a part of PE class.

He was being held in jail in lieu of $200,000 bail. But he posted bail Friday and was released.

He told police he fell asleep at the wheel after getting off work, but police said they suspect he might have been impaired. A blood draw is being analyzed to see if alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident.

Friday was also the last day of classes at Ferndale's Windward High School, where students were still in mourning over the deaths of classmates Shane Ormiston, 18, and Gabe Anderson, 15 -- the two killed by the SUV.

A memorial on school grounds conveys prayers for the classmates that didn't survive and prayers for the injured to get well soon.

For the first time, we're hearing from the family of one of the two students killed.

Cameron Webster, Gabe Anderson's cousin, said Gabe was "funny, nice, smart -- great guy to be around, make you happy when you're angry."

For 13-year-old Cameron, Gabe wasn't only a cousin, but more like a brother.

"I get feelings most of the time when I look up into the sky; I see clouds shaped as angels, and I'm pretty sure that's him."

Jamie Torres, Gabe's aunt, said, "We're taking everything day by day. I honestly don't know how I'm going to get my mom through this. He was her baby."

She said Gabe was raised by his grandmother.

The loss for the family is only a small part of the overall grief in Ferndale.

"It's a tragic loss for the community. I don't think that anybody, I don't think our community has ever suffered something like this," Torres said.

The city of Ferndale plans to hold a candlelight vigil Saturday night.
