Body of overdue hiker near Leavenworth found in river

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. (AP) — A Chelan County sheriff's spokesman says searchers have recovered the body of a 46-year-old missing hiker from the Icicle River near Leavenworth, Washington.

Emergency management specialist Rich Magnussen says the woman, Sheila McGowan-Conoley of Leavenworth, was reported overdue on a day hike with her dog.

A sheriff's helicopter spotted what was believed to be a body in the water on Thursday. Magnussen said on Friday morning that they don't know how or why McGowan-Conoley was in the river.

Relatives reported her missing and a search began Wednesday night after her vehicle was found parked, with her dog outside the car. A person camping nearby found a woman's hiking sandal downriver from a small beach the hiker was known to frequent.
