MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A sex education teacher has drawn the ire of parents after taking students on a field trip to an adult novelty store in Minneapolis.

Gaia Democratic School director Starri Hedges took about a dozen middle- and high-school-aged students to the Smitten Kitten last week. Hedges told the Star Tribune that she wanted to provide a safe and welcoming environment for students to learn about human sexual behavior.

She says the field trip offered access to products that can be used to practice safer sex. She says some students bought condoms.

Parent Lynn Floyd’s 11- and 13-year-old daughters were on the field trip. Floyd says the trip was “a major breach of trust” and has withdrawn his children from the school.

Other teachers defended the trip.

“What I saw happening on our trip, I thought it was beautiful because kids could talk to these sex educators without any shame, without any fear,” Director of the school Starri Hedges said.

Gaia Democratic School? Are you kidding me? “Gaia” was the make-believe, primal Greek mother goddess…the great mother of all; creator and giver of birth of the earth; the heavenly gods, the titans, and the giants were born to her.

Anyone who would send their child to a school with such a name/philosophy should not be surprised when a field-trip to a sex-shop to explore human sexual behavior is part of the curriculum.

Was no permission slip sent home? Good grief.

Why do 11-13 year olds need exposure to sex at all? When I was 11 I was thinking about legos and riding my bike. Sex was that thing that existed, but I really could care less. People wonder why there is so many under age sexual encounters between students and teachers, its because you start them thinking about what might be and give them images in their heads, instead of sugar plums, they get the ideas of sex and how wonderful it is.
Why do you want your kids to grow up so fast? Keep the information for a more mature time in their lives and let them be kids.
I am reminded of the story by Corrie Ten Boom

“And so seated next to my father in the train compartment, I suddenly asked, “Father, what is sex?”
He turned to look at me, as he always did when answering a question, but to my surprise he said nothing. At last he stood up, lifted his traveling case off the floor and set it on the floor.
Will you carry it off the train, Corrie?” he said.
I stood up and tugged at it. It was crammed with the watches and spare parts he had purchased that morning.
    It’s too heavy,” I said.
Yes,” he said, “and it would be a pretty poor father who would ask his little girl to carry such a load. It’s the same way, Corrie, with knowledge. Some knowledge is too heavy for children. When you are older and stronger, you can bear it. For now you must trust me to carry it for you.”

I agree with you 100%, a bunch of weirdos in my opinion. We all know what a sex shop contains and I fail to see how dildos and porn are a necessary topic in a childrens sex ed class.

The image used in the story sensationalized the nature of the buisness. It’s next door to a sandwich shop!Very pleasant neighbors. Please update your image headline to reflect what the store actually look like.

Here’s a resource you seemed to have missed.

Does the exterior of the building really matter? The fact remains that the teacher took minors into a shop that sells adult material without the parents consent. When one considers the increasing numbers of sexual relations between teachers and students it really adds to the questionable nature of this trip, especially when the teacher considers that “there is no right age” for sexual matters.
