Hiker in Columbia River Gorge rescued with clothing rope

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon woman was saved by some quick thinking when she fell while hiking in the Columbia River Gorge.

KPTV-TV reports that 19-year-old April Meads fell about 30 feet Sunday while hiking between Horsetail Falls and Triple Falls.

Meads says she held on to a root for about 45 minutes while others went to get help. Members of the Portland-based Mazamas Climbing Group, which teaches mountaineering education, were nearby and fashioned a rope out of clothing to help Meads up.

With the help of the group, Meads was able to climb back to safety without injury.
