Seattle police chief gets lesson from kids on safety around schools

SEATTLE -- Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O'Toole heard concerns and ideas from students and Denny Middle School Monday in an effort to make the surrounding community safer for kids.

The "Youth Ambassadors" class at Denny Middle School polled classmates and developed ideas to give kids who walk to and from school some peace of mind.

Their teacher, Lori Markowitz, said, "They felt they wanted to do something that would really create change and bring youth voice into this situation here and how could they make their school a better place."

During the past few months, police have investigated a number of disturbing crimes in West Seattle targeting children. Many of these crimes happened just before or after school and just feet away from school.

Police Chief Kathleen O'Toole says officers are doing what they can.

O'Toole said, "We have stepped up patrols in the neighborhood to support the young people here and their families and will continue to work with them."

Students had some great ideas for police. First, kids who walk to class could have a safety whistle and use it if they are in danger. Students can also take part in walking to and from school together.
