39-year-old Graham man dies in kayaking mishap at Neah Bay

NEAH BAY, Wash. (AP) — The Clallam County sheriff's office says a 39-year-old man has died after he was knocked out his kayak by a wave at Neah Bay on the northern tip of Washington's Olympic Peninsula.

Chief Criminal Deputy Brian King said Roland Abiva, of Graham, had just launched his 13-foot kayak from a beach Thursday when it was capsized by a wave and he was knocked into the water. Bystanders quickly came to his aid and found him floating face down in the surf.

They brought him to shore and performed CPR until Makah emergency medical personnel arrived and took him to the Makah Clinic, where he was later pronounced dead.

The sheriff's office says Abiva was wearing both a dry suit and a personal flotation device.

The cause of death is under investigation.
