Spokane jail inmate dies shortly after arrest

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — An inmate died in the Spokane County jail Wednesday morning shortly after he was arrested by Spokane police for violating a domestic violence order.

The Spokesman-Review reports police arrested the man at a home where they were told a man and woman argument. They were told the man had possibly hidden a gun.

Spokane police say they arrested him for violating a domestic violence no contact order and for unlawful possession of a firearm. Officers say the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Spokane County commissioner Todd Mielke says he was told the man went into cardiac arrest during processing.

Police say he was given CPR and transported to a hospital, where he died. His name has not been released.

This was is the second death of a Spokane jail inmate this month.
