Bay City, MI (WNEM) — A New Jersey family made headlines this week after a DNA test showed a set of twins had two fathers.
Although rare, its not an impossible situation and it’s one a local man knows all too well.
“Very very odd. I never in a million years thought that could happen,” said Chad Snyder, one of the fathers.
When his girlfriend was pregnant three years ago, Snyder was excited to be a father of twins. One boy and one girl, but things didn’t work out quite like he had planned.
“Well, we had my son three years ago, and just so happens he has a twin sister. The girl isn’t mine, but the son is,” Snyder said.
Snyder said after the twins were born people would comment how much the baby girl looked like another man in the mom’s life. To sort things out, the three went on the Maury Povich show to get a DNA test.
As it turns out, the boy, Tagyen, was indeed Snyder’s child, but the girl, Payton, was not.
“Things got really really hard. It was very strenuous,” Snyder said.
His situation is rare, but it can happen. If a woman has sex with two men during the same menstrual cycle, two eggs can be fertilized by different men.
Snyder said he was already very close to both the twins when he found out only one was his. It was a moment he said was heartbreaking.
“We were very bonded. I was the only one who could feed her at the time,” he said.
Snyder and the mother have since separated. The ordeal was too much of a strain on their relationship.
“Yeah, it’s been very very hard. I’ve started to get adjusted to it over the last year, but there’s nothing I can do to fix it,” he said.
Snyder has custody of Tagyen, but he said he rarely sees Payton. At one point he believed he was her father and now, he wishes he could see more of her.
“I would love to, but it’s probably never going to happen,” he said.
