Restaurant to host 'White Appreciation Day,' offer discount

MILLIKEN, Colo. -- Owners of a barbecue restaurant in Milliken, Colorado plan to host a "White Appreciation Day," offering a 10 percent discount to white customers next month, 9news.com reports.

According to 9news.com, the owners of Rubbin Buttz BBQ, Edgar Antillon and Miguel Jimenez, both Hispanic, said they plan to offer a 10 percent discount to all white customers and no one else on June 11.

"We have a whole month for Black History Month," Antillon told 9news.com. "We have a whole month for Hispanic Heritage Month, so we though the least we could do was offer one day to appreciate white Americans."

Both men told 9news.com they expect to receive backlash about the day, as others in the community are upset over the planned event.

"It's a perpetuation of racism," Weld County civil rights activist and community organizer Ricardo Romero told 9news.com.

Antillon told reporters that the day isn't meant to discriminate, but bring people together. He says as a Hispanic male, he has been the target of racism in the past. He hopes opening the discussion will prompt others to think differently.

"We're all American, whether you came from a different country or you were born here," Antillon said.

Antillon and Jimenez said there could be legal repercussions for the day, and are talking with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies.
