Spokane police shoot, wound man in gunfire exchange

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Police in Spokane say an officer has shot and wounded a man who fired shots toward police late Wednesday night.

The man was taken to a hospital. There was no immediate word on his condition. No officers were hurt.

The Spokesman-Review reports that Police Chief Frank Straub says officers were called to a home by residents who said a man was suicidal, intoxicated and had a gun.

The chief says shots were fired — presumably by the man — as officers approached the home through an alley.

Straub says officers heard the man tell them to "just do it."

When there was a pause in the gunfire, an officer fired one shot, hitting the man.
