Police: Coeur d'Alene police officer shot by suspect who stole his patrol car dies

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -- A 16-year veteran of the Coeur d'Alene police force died of a gunshot wound Tuesday night, just hours after he was shot trying to stop a man who stole his patrol car, the department announced.

"The Coeur d’Alene Police Department is profoundly sorrowful to confirm the death of our fellow officer Sergeant Greg Moore who passed away from his injuries from a gunshot wound at 5:50 pm today," the department said.

"Words cannot adequately express the level of mourning we feel for Sergeant Moore’s family and our law enforcement family ... Please respect the privacy of his family at this time while they tend to funeral arrangements."

Moore was shot while trying to stop a suspect identified as Jonathan Renfro, 26, who allegedly stole his patrol car.

Renfro was charged earlier Tuesday with attempted murder, theft of a police vehicle, theft of an officer's gun and being a felon with a gun. The attempted murder charge will likely be changed to murder now.

He was ordered held in the Kootenai County Jail in lieu of $2 million bail.
