Tests show jail inmate may have died from dehydration

COUPEVILLE, Wash. (AP) — Initial tests show an Island County jail inmate may have died from dehydration.

The Daily Herald of Everett reports it may take several more weeks to confirm what caused Keaton Farris' death. He was found dead in his cell on Wednesday. Two Island County sheriff's deputies have been placed paid leave while an investigation is conducted.

Island County Coroner Robert Bishop announced his preliminary findings on Sunday.

Farris was booked into the jail on March 26. Court papers say he was awaiting a mental health evaluation to determine if he was competent to assist with his own defense. He had been charged with identify theft.
