Carnation killer to prosecutor: 'If you want to kill me, go ahead and kill me, I don’t care'

SEATTLE -- The cross-examination of Carnation killer Joseph McEnroe on the stand began Tuesday, with prosecutors pointing out his lies to police and accusing him of putting on a show for the jury with his twitching and speech impediment.

"They died because of me," McEnroe admitted during the sentencing phase in which a jury will determine if he is sentenced to life in prison or is given the death penalty.

The jury on March 25 convicted him of murder in the killing of six members of a family in Carnation on Christmas Eve 2007.

The prosecutor on Tuesday pointed out several inconsistencies with McEnroe's statements to police, to which a frustrated McEnroe responded:

"If you want to kill me go ahead and kill me. I don’t care."

Prosecutors say McEnroe and his girlfriend Michele Anderson went to Michele's parents' house with the intention of killing the couple before a scheduled family dinner.

McEnroe says he shot Wayne and Judy Anderson after Michele's gun jammed. Then, McEnroe cleaned up the mess.

McEnroe testified that he and Michele then killed her brother, Scott, his wife, Erica, and their two small children when they arrived later because they were witnesses.

Prosecutors say McEnroe then lied about what happened to protect himself.

"I was trying not to think about these things," McEnroe said. "I was trying to put these things out of my mind."

McEnroe will be back on the stand Wednesday.
