PORTLAND — A 24-year-old Oregon woman who surprised her longtime online ‘boyfriend’ at their first face-to-face meeting by bashing him in the head with a bat was sentenced Wednesday to nearly six years in prison.

KPTV in Portland reported Haley Fox, of Turner, Ore., had pleaded guilty earlier this month to charges of third-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. She was sentenced Wednesday to five years, 10 months in prison.

According to detectives with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Samuel Campbell, 26, of Adger, Ala., began a relationship with Fox via the Internet in 2013. This April, Campbell agreed to move from Alabama to Oregon to live with Fox.

Campbell went to Fox’s home in Turner, Ore., in April to meet her for the first time in person. When he arrived, Fox led him to a table outside that court documents said had candles and wine glasses on it.

Court documents say he sat down at the outdoor table and Fox poured him some wine. And she then asked Campbell to close his eyes, as if to present him with a surprise. That’s when “things took what could have been a deadly turn,” the sheriff’s office said.

Because while Campbell’s eyes were closed, she took a metal baseball bat and bashed him in the back of his head three times, court documents say.

According to detectives, Fox told investigators she injured Campbell because she didn’t want to be his girlfriend.

Campbell suffered a fractured skull and required nine staples to close his wound.
