Family's tries to visit vacation home, finds 'hole' where cabin once sat

SPRINGDALE, Wash. (AP) — A family heading out to their cabin in rural northeast Washington got a surprise when they discovered someone had stolen the entire log structure off its foundation.

Chris Hempel tells The Spokesman-Review her family drove to the cabin Tuesday near Springdale in Stevens County. They found the lock on the property's gate cut and an empty hole where the cabin once sat.

"We drove up to the cabin and the cabin was gone," Hempel told the Spokesman-Review.

She found tire tracks and thinks a thief drove to the property, backed up a trailer, loaded the entire cabin in one piece and took off.

The family typically visits their cabin about every two weeks, and their last trip to the cabin was March 21. The 10-by-20 foot log cabin didn't have electricity or a septic system hookup.

Hempel isn't sure who would have taken it but she hopes someone will find it and return it to its home in the woods.

"We're just kind of at a loss right now," Hempel said. "Like, seriously?"
