VIDEO: Coast Guard helicopter helps find lost man, dog along Washington coast

OCEAN SHORES, Wash. (AP) — A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Astoria, Oregon, rescued a 60-year-old man and his dog after they got lost while hiking near Ocean City on the Washington coast.

The Coast Guard says the helicopter hoisted aboard the Ocean City man and dog and took them to the nearby Ocean Shores airport, where they were met by Grays Harbor County sheriff's deputies.

Both were reported in good condition. The man was not identified.

County search and rescue personnel had started looking for the man about 5 p.m. Sunday. His cell phone reportedly died and he had no other way to communicate.

Ground searchers relayed the last known location and the air crew used night vision goggles and infrared cameras to look for a heat signature in the swampy terrain.

Rescue pilot Lt. Cmdr. Daniel Leary says the hiker had an old lighter that wouldn't light but could spark. Leary says that through night vision goggles, that looked like a flashlight.

The man was found late Sunday night.
