U.S. Congressman, former King County sheriff backing 'Blue Alert' bill to help protect police

WASHINGTON, DC -- Protecting the ones who protect us. New legislation aimed at stopping cop killers would create a national warning system similar to Amber Alerts. U.S. Congressman Dave Reichert co-sponsored the bill to create a ‘Blue Alert’ system. It's named for the two NYPD officers killed sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn just before Christmas.

Alerts would be issued for three reasons: "One is that an officer’s injured or killed in the line of duty and we have suspect information. Two, that an officer is missing in the line of duty and we can't find that officer and three, there is an emergent or credible threat,” says Rep. Reichert. He says the bill has bi-partisan support and President Obama is expected to sign it during National Police Week in May.
