SHORELINE, Wash. (AP) — Shoreline Community College has announced a plan to give two years of free college to 56 high-achieving local high school graduates.

The Seattle Times reports (http://is.gd/TZtYgq ) the new scholarship program is unique in Washington but is modeled after one in Oregon.

The Shoreline Scholars program is aimed at students with a grade-point average of at least 3.5 and in some financial need.

Shoreline President Cheryl Roberts says they want to attract high-performing students who, for whatever reason, are going to find college too expensive for them.

The college is covering the cost through existing financial aid money, with some help from private donors and its foundation.

The program is expected to cost about $400,000 over two years, and Shoreline hopes to be able to offer it every year.
