Devastated mom of 2-year-old boy shot to death in Kitsap County cries, 'I want to know why...'

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- The parents of a 2-year-old boy shot to death by an unknown gunman said Monday they can't understand how they could have lost their innocent son in such a tragic way.

The shooting occurred Saturday in a Bremerton-area trailer home, where Jalisa Lum and her son, 2-year-old Kaden Lum, were staying with Jalisa's roommate, Heather Kelso, 29.

Kelso and Kaden were both killed when a gunman opened fire in the trailer and then fled.

Kaden's parents don't live together, but they have been together since Saturday, trying to come to grips what they say is unbearable grief.

Their son was just starting his life, beginning to talk and show his personality. And he was taken from them in an instant.

Kaden's father, James Trammel, said he hasn't been able to walk into his son's room since the tragedy.

"Wake up in the morning, waiting to hear his feet coming, running down the hallway. They don't," Trammel said.

"I want to know why," Jalisa Lum said, crying. "I want to know why you did this to me, to him, why did you do that?"

Jalisa said she was with Kaden Saturday morning. She said she woke up to the sound of gunfire and screams from her roommate. She said she tried to pull Kaden to the ground, but she wasn't able to protect him in time.

She said it all happened so fast that she didn't get a look at the gunman. She said she hopes sheriff's deputies are able to catch him so they can get some answers.
