Multistate investigation announced into Premera cyberattack

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Washington state's insurance commissioner has announced a multistate investigation into the cyberattack on Premera Blue Cross.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler said Tuesday he plans to work with his counterparts in Alaska and Oregon to look into operations at Premera, which is based in Mountlake Terrace, Washington.

The investigation will explore the January cyberattack that was disclosed by Premera last week.

The breach exposed the personal information of 11 million consumers, including 6 million in Washington.

Kreidler said in a statement he is concerned about the nearly two-month lag between Premera's discovery of the attack Jan. 29 and its public disclosure March 17.

Other subjects of the investigation may include the extent of the financial damage and steps taken to prevent a future attack.
