Hillsboro, OR — A man who’s been in the Washington County Jail for more than two years was released Thursday after testifying in court.

Benito Vasquez-Hernandez has been held as a material witness in his son’s murder trial. Court documents show Eloy Vasquez-Santiago admitted to family members that he killed Maria Bolanos-Rivera of Hillsboro in 2012.

Prosecutors considered Vasquez-Santiago’s father’s testimony to be essential to their case, so a judge ordered that he be kept behind bars over fears he would take off and not testify.

Vasquez-Hernandez was jailed without ever being charged with a crime.

Vasquez-Hernandez’s lawyers said he should have been released because he is poor, has no formal education and low mental competency, and is an immigrant who doesn’t understand the American justice system.

In court Thursday, Vasquez-Hernandez denied his initial statements about seeing his son with a bloody knife.

The judge released him from jail after several hours of testimony.
