Deputies: Man attacks woman with medieval mace
SACRAMENTO, CA — A woman is recovering in the hospital after she was brutally attacked with what appeared to be a medieval mace on Garfield Avenue near Auburn Boulevard.
Around 4:15 a.m., a Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy was patrolling the area when he came across the attack in progress. According to the deputy, a woman in her 50’s was walking her dog when she was attacked out of nowhere by an unknown 34-year-old man, later identified as Travis Lanning.
The woman tells authorities that Lanning killed her dog before she took off running.
However, deputies say her dog was not killed and was found later. The dog was said to be O.K., according to a veterinarian.
When Lanning caught up to her, that’s when he allegedly began beating her with the mace. Witnesses say the woman was hit in the head and her skull was punctured.
Deputies say the victim suffered from serious injuries, but they are not life-threatening.
Lanning was arrested on scene, and is expected to face charges for assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem.
