Tax scammer finds out victim is pregnant, suddenly has change of heart

BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- A woman scared off a scammer by telling him she was nine months pregnant.

According to KUSA, Sarah Carr received a voicemail Tuesday morning from a man who claimed to be an IRS agent.

"I called it back. The voicemail was saying there was a lien on my property. I was being convicted of tax fraud," Carr told the TV station.

The man on the phone seemed official. Carr said he knew much of her personal information, including her address.

"I just start crying," Carr told KUSA. "I said, 'I'm nine months pregnant. I'm supposed to have a baby in three weeks. I don't know what I'm going to do.'"

Apparently that was enough to scare off the scammer.

"And then he says, 'wait, wait, wait, wait, you're pregnant?' And I said, 'yes!' And he goes 'I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, this is a scam. You're OK. We're scamming you. We were just trying to get money out of you. Please stop crying.'"

Carr told the TV station she was shocked at how real the scam seemed.
