Tacoma woman settles foster abuse case for $1.3 million

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A Tacoma woman who accused the state of failing to protect her from abuse at three licensed foster homes has settled a lawsuit with the state for $1.3 million.

The News Tribune reports that a federal court judge approved the settlement last week.

The woman sued last year, saying she endured years of sexual and mental abuse while in those foster homes.

One of her lawyers, Sergio Garciduenas-Sease, says she will now "have an opportunity for a safe and stable life."

Calls to the state agency that oversees the state's foster-care program were not immediately returned Wednesday.

The woman was 4 when she was placed with a foster couple; the husband was ultimately convicted of multiple sex crimes against children. At another home, her foster father and his son were later convicted of sexually abusing the girl.
