Apple unveiled the Apple Watch smartwatch, the company's first wearable device, at their September 9, 2014 announcement. The Apple Watch pairs with iPhone 5 or newer to display notifications. It features a magnetic charger, health and fitness apps and a crown that controls zoom and scrolling with a twist.

NEW YORK — After giving us a teaser in September, Tim Cook is expected to reveal the last remaining details about the Apple Watch during an event in San Francisco Monday afternoon.

Apple fans will be waiting to find out when in April the company’s first wearable device will go on sale, how long the battery will last, and how much each of the three different Apple Watch models will cost (prices will start at $349, but that’s all we know about pricing).

While Apple has promoted the Apple Watch as a “revolutionary product,” it’s essentially just an extension of the iPhone, without which the device wouldn’t work. Calendar alerts and message notifications, for example, can only be displayed on the Apple Watch when paired with the iPhone.

This limitation may make the cost of the device hard to justify for most consumers.

Still, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple has asked its suppliers and manufacturing partners to make 5 million Apple Watches for the first wave of buyers.
