CHICAGO — A woman is in custody after a 9-month-old baby was found dead on Chicago Monday morning.

Officers responded to a 911 call around 9:30 a.m. near 28th and Avers in the city’s Little Village neighborhood.

Police say they arrived on scene to find the baby girl with “visible signs of trauma.” The Chicago Tribune reports the baby’s throat had been cut with a power saw.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A neighbor says the baby lived there along with her parents and two siblings.

Police say a 52-year-old woman, the baby’s grandmother, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with self-inflicted wounds. The Tribune reports she harmed the baby because she would not stop crying.

She is in police custody at the hospital.
