SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Two-year-old Mariah Anderson has been fighting for her life since she was born.

Now, her family is fending off hateful comments on the Internet.

Mariah was born with a rare condition called Chromosome Two Duplication Syndrome that impairs her learning and motor skills, WCBD reports. Her life expectancy is grim. But she turned 2 years old Saturday, and to celebrate, her mother posted her picture on Facebook.

Mariah’s photo was quickly shared more than a thousand times, but not because of Mariah’s smile, her family says. Many took the comments section to make fun of her appearance. Some compared her smile to a leprechaun’s, and hurled other insulting comments.

Kyra Pringle, Mariah’s mother, was horrified.

“The things you guys are saying about my child, she’s not a monster,” Pringle told WCBD. “She’s real.”

Others in Mariah’s family agreed.

“If you’re out there and you’re doing these things, and you think that it’s funny, it’s not funny,” Mariah’s grandmother Linda Pringle said. “This is actually a human being, this is a child, this is a baby.”

Family members now just want the storm to pass, and the picture’s viral fame to die out.

Hello , Please know that God will deal with them on his own time ! You & your family use your #Strength to love & care for your babygirl. I know this doesn’t help but I am sorry for the cruel words that were spoke about your beautiful angel . I wish n the best for you & your family . God Bless

There’s a special place in hell for those that ridicule or take advantage of the disabled. I can’t predict the future but my hunch is this little laugh will hurt down the road.

  • Frank Dofelmier

Some people can be very cruel. Some people think they can get behind a computer and be anonymous. It is time to put ones full name on the thread so they can think what they are saying and to be responsible for their comments. I am going to do that right now.

  • Erica Nichols

She is so sweet and adorable. People are so mean. I pray for peace for your family and this wonderful baby girl.

  • Phyllis

How very sad that people feel the need to make fun of a precious child. I am very sorry the family has to deal with the ignorance of our world today.

  • Christyna Magley

I’m so sorry momma.. Some people know only to hurt others thinking that will hide the nasty in themselves. Only, what it does is show everyone just how truly NASTY they are. Your time with your baby should be cherished. Not spent fending off people who need help. Mariah is beautiful! Her smile, her big sparkly eyes.
And as a photographer lighting is huge in making or breaking a photograph. The quality of the original photo does not do your baby justice. And inverting (making it a negative) a picture of anyone makes them look demonic. Anyone! Still it gives no one the right to make fun of another human being.
I hope the cruelty dies off soon, but please remember, it is only a reflection of themselves. In the end, it has nothing to do with you or your little one. Sending my love and prayers for your family.

She is a beautiful girl with a beautiful smile. There is nothing weird or strange to make fun of. Those parents need to know she is just God’s perfect child and hold their heads up high.

  • Lisa

She is beautiful! This is why we have bullying in schools. Reflections on the parents, this is where the children learn from. Ignore the the mean people. You have precious baby girl who will fill your heart with love.

  • Tracy Alter

A very dear friend has a daughter with both Down’s Syndrome and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and has been vent dependent since she was about 2 months old. She wasn’t expected to live 2 years, but just turned 8 :). I smile so big when her mom posts pictures for us. The love and dedication this girl feels is nothing short of perfection.
On several occasions, this beautiful little girl has been targeted by hate-filled people, but her mom still posts her pictures, proudly. She has learned that those of us that support her, really love seeing her. Yes, words can hurt, but don’t let this awful people win. Post that beautiful little girl’s picture with love every single day.

enjoy your time with her. dont let what others say tarnish that. For right or wrong it is human nature to stare at, point, and whisper about things not understood. It is that ignorance that sparks cruel and hateful things.

  • Debbie Evans

shes adorable, love her and hug her daily… every day you are able to spend with her is a blessing, anyone who sais different is a moron….

  • Jessie

Another one of God’s beautiful angels! Let the lord receive your prayers and be blessed sweetheart! We can’t change understanding and people fear what they don’t understand. I know it’s not OK, i see this stuff more often then not and it’s sad how ignorant people can be. Love to you precious darling, sure wish I could give you a big hug. Please give that precious baby a big hug from me.

  • tired worker

She is a pretty little girl and such a sweet smile. I am sorry that you had to read comments from people who hate themselves so much that they have to say such cruel things. She brought a smile to my face just seeing her. Thank you for being such a loving mother and wanting to show the world your beautiful child.

  • ashleigh wolff

This baby is beautiful. Enough said, I have no words for the misguided individuals who would shame a wonderful wide smiled little lady like this. It’s shameful against humans in general to do such a thing.

  • Brenda Jones

Happy Birthday, baby Mariah. I hope that every day you live on this earth is blessed for you and for your family.

  • Leah

Your baby is beautiful. Don’t let anyone of those ignorant people get to you. I have two children with special needs. I know how it is. God bless you alland yyour beautiful baby girl!

  • Tina Reynolds

I am so sorry that people were so cruel! She is beautiful and obviously she is a little fighter! Don’t stop showing her beautiful smile off! God bless you all and that precious happy little angel!!

  • joyce joyce

I think she is beautiful!! Forget about all others and Cherish that little girl. God bless her and ur whole family. God gave u a wonderful gift. I too have a child with a mild disability that suffers from bulling because of it. Forget what others have to say. Enjoy ur time together. :)

  • alice smith

This baby truly does have a beautiful smile. Sad that there’s so many people in this world that are utterly filled with hate that they’d even attack an innocent baby.

  • Michelle

For those people who left negative comments, I bet they don’t have kids. They don’t know what the life will become after you become a mom or dad. You need to remember what you said to this poor girl after you have your own baby. You will find out it’s so cruel.

  • Rodney

I I think she is adorable and vey cute I personally love that smile, anyone who could be mean to the adorable child has no heart.

  • Weegiewarbler

She is a wee cutie … folks that spout nasty stuff about a defenceless 2 year old with a limited life expectancy are revealing more about their shrivelled and bitter hearts that anything else.
