DALLAS -- A Dallas sportscaster delivered a powerful -- and very personal message -- to a group of parents who defended students that held a "WHITE POWER" sign recently at a high school basketball game.

WFAA sportscater Dale Hansen, often known for his biting commentary on contemporary issues, said it was no accident that the students were holding the racist sign at Flower Mound High School in East Texas last week, as some parents said it was.

How does he know it was no accident? From experience, he said.

"There's a history in Flower Mound," Hansen said, describing his grandaughter's experience with hearing racial slurs chanted at the school.

But Hansen said he doesn't blame the kids holding the sign. Because he used to be like those kids, he said.

"I think I was 12 before I realized that the N-word actually wasn't the first name of WIllie Mays, Hank Aaron, Elston Howard, and so many more," Hansen said, describing the racist slangs his father often used. "Kids have to be taught to hate. Kids become the product of that environment."

Hansen went on to describe calling out his father for his racist slang, and help bringing about change -- however small --in his family. He knows that as others continue to call out racism, change will continue.

"Ignorance will be replaced someday by the wisdom they learn when they live in the real world; when they meet the people who don't look like them, didn't grow up the way they did," he said.
