City of Seattle employees could receive weeks of leave for new children

SEATTLE (AP) — City of Seattle employees may receive four weeks of paid leave to care for a new child.

Mayor Ed Murray and Councilwoman Jean Godden made the parental leave proposal Monday to support the families of city workers.

Godden says women with parental leave are more likely to return to work, and the benefit would help reduce the gender wage gap.

KUOW reports the paid leave would be available to men and women. It would cost the city as much as $1.4 million a year.

Murray says Seattle can afford it. The City Council is expected to work on the proposal over the next few weeks.
