Hundreds of volunteers help Washington flood victims

ABERDEEN, Wash. -- The clean-up continues in Grays Harbor County from a storm that hit all the way back on January 5th. It dumped ten inches of rain over 24 hours causing more than thirty landslides in Aberdeen alone.

On Saturday, the community rallied around more than 100 homeowners who still need help.

“It’s been a nightmare,” said James Freman, a homeowner in Aberdeen. “I woke up in the morning with water in my house and I look outside and it`s like a river running through the property.”

That river eventually subsided, but the damage to Freman's home was done. Now more than a dozen volunteers are helping him pick up the pieces.

Some are from Americorps, others are from area churches. They are focusing on getting water damaged insulation out of the home. If it’s left there, mold can spread.

So the volunteers are also suiting up in waterproof suits and respirators, and inching into crawl spaces.

Some of the homes are still too damaged to help. Many were pushed off their foundations by the mudslides.

But there are more than 100 homeowners getting the help they need and more than 200 volunteers making it happen.
