Washington man found dead at popular surfing destination

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Authorities in Puerto Rico say a 28-year-old tourist from Washington state has died while surfing along the U.S. territory's west coast.

Police identified the surfer as Travis Fornei. His hometown was not immediately available, although public records show that a 28-year-old Travis Forney lives in North Bend, Washington. A Facebook profile belonging to a Travis Forney also stated that he was on his way to Puerto Rico on Feb. 15.

The U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement Wednesday that they found the surfer face down in the water at Steps Beach in the town of Rincon. The man was found Tuesday afternoon and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A high surf advisory was issued Tuesday warning of waves of 12 to 14 feet.
