5-year-old Port Angeles girl caught measles at a clinic where infected man had been

PORT ANGELES, Wash. -- The state Health Department says a 5-year-old girl caught the measles at a Port Angeles clinic where an infected 52-year-old man had been, the Peninsula Daily News reported Wednesday.

Paul Throne, spokesman for the state Health Department, told the newspaper that the girl had not gone to the Peninsula Children's Clinic because she was ill, but had visited the clinic with other family members.

She left the clinic an hour after a 52-year-old Port Angeles man, who was later diagnosed with measles, had left the clinic, Throne said. She was diagnosed Feb. 11.

The man has since recovered, but the girl is still in quarantine. And students at her Olympic Christian School believed  vulnerable to measles have been quarantined at home as a precaution.

The measles virus can hang in the air or on environmental surfaces for two hours or more. The girl had not been vaccinated.

The Peninsula Daily News said four people -- three in Clallam County and one in Jefferson County -- have been tested for the measles virus and were awaiting test results.
