Washington family helps rescue stranded seal pup on California coast (VIDEO)

SAN DIEGO -- A Redmond family helped rescue a baby seal while they were on vacation in southern California.

Andrea Keenan and her sons found the seal pup wedged between some rocks while visiting the beach.

The family contacted Sea World who then came to rescue the seal. According to Sea World, starving and weak pups are being rescued all along the coast.

"The pups are not getting to the food sources they need in order to survive, so they're ending up on the California beaches very dehydrated and malnourished and in some cases emaciated," said David Koontz, Sea World's director of communications.

The baby seals being rescued were born last summer.

Experts say most are 8 or 9 months old and haven't gained much weight since they were born.
