PORT ANGELES, Wash. — Clallam County announced Friday it has quarantined Olympic Christian School students after a 5-year-old kindergartener there was diagnosed with measles.

“All students who cannot demonstrate proof of immunity to measles have been excluded from Olympic Christian School until February 27, 2015, and placed in quarantine,” Clallam County Health and Human Services announced said on its website.

“Quarantined students must stay at home, avoid public places, and have no contact with people who are not immune to measles.

“Students and teachers who have proof of immunity may safely return to classes on Tuesday, February 17, 2015. Measles is a highly contagious disease and is transmitted by airborne exposure.”

The 5-year-old kindergarten student was diagnosed Thursday with measles.

The health department said the child was “directly exposed to Clallam County’s first case of measles during the last week of January,” it said, without explaining how the child and the 52-year-old Port Angeles man came into contact.

A 52-year-old who had been hospitalized with measles is now fully recovered.

Dr. Tom Locke, public health officer for Clallam and Jefferson counties, had said Thursday that the girl was not in school during the time she was contagious.

Would like to know more about this story. Was the child recently vaccinated? Was she vaccinated at all? How do they know it was from the 52 year old? So many questions but I do agree with the quarantine effort.
