SALEM, Ore. — What started as a gag on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show is becoming a reality in Oregon’s capital, as city leaders move forward with a plan to install signs warning park goers about owl attacks.

There have been four reports of owls attacking joggers recently. Just last week, an owl reportedly swooped down and stole the hat off a man’s head, FOX 12 Oregon reported.

The city identified the birds as barred owls, and officials said park goers should be especially watchful for the birds between dusk and dawn.

To aid in awareness, the city is installing signs that show an owl swooping down on a passer-by.

The Rachel Maddow Show designed the sign and sent it to Salem’s parks department, asking if they wanted to use it. The city said “yes,” and plans to have them installed by Friday.

The signs will include an inscription that reads, “Special thanks to artist Allegra Flores and the Rachel Maddow Show for these signs.”
