Deputies: 11-year-old girl home alone endured terrifying burglary

LEAVENWORTH -- Sheriff's deputies are looking for a suspected burglar who broke into a home while an 11-year-old girl was in the house alone and attempted to reach her when she locked herself in the bathroom.

Around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, the girl was at her home in the 100 block of West Whitman Street in Leavnworth when she heard a door open, the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said. Soon, she spotted a man wearing black pants, black coat and a black ski mask standing in her living room.

The girl ran to a bathroom and locked the door. A few minutes later, deputies said, the suspect began pounding on the locked door, but the victim did not open up. The girl called police and the suspect left the house.

Deputies called to the scene could not find the suspect. They discovered numerous items in the house had been ransacked, however, and an unknown number of things were taken.

There have been other incidents of homeowners seeing a man matching the description in the same neighborhood, deputies said. On Saturday, someone wearing the same style clothing but with their face painted white had pounded on the front door of the same home, deputies said, but left a short time later.

Anyone with any additional information on the burglary is encouraged to call the sheriff's office.
